Description

In order to fully understand the current situation of wild vascular plant resources in Xinjiang Xiata Ancient Road National Forest Park and provide basic information for subsequent work, it is necessary to revise and update the wild vascular plant list in Xinjiang Xiata Ancient Road National Forest Park. Based on previous studies, we updated the list of wild vascular plants in Xinjiang Xiata Ancient Road National Forest Park through literature collection, specimen study, field investigation and the latest taxonomic research results. In total, the present checklist recorded 843 species belonging to 339 genera in 74 families (including infraspecific taxa, the same below), with 20 species of Pteridophyta in 10 genera and 8 families, 5 species of gymnosperms in 3 genera and 3 families, and 818 species of angiosperms in 326 genera and 63 families.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 844 records.

Geographic Coverage

This checklist documented 843 species across the Xinjiang Xiata Ancient Road National Forest Park, which is situated in the territory of Xiata Township, Zhaosu County. It acts as a watershed connecting the northern Ili River Valley and the southern Tarim Basin. Its geographical coordinates range from 42°24′31″ to 42°40′43″ latitude and 80°31′31″ to 80°54′58″ longitude. The park covers an area of 38,507.49 hectares and comprises three main sections: the Zhaosu Forest Farm, the Xiata Grassland, and the Tulasu Glacier Area.

Bounding Coordinates South West [42.409, 80.525], North East [42.679, 80.916]

Title Checklist of Vascular Plants in Xinjiang Xiata Ancient Road National Forest Park
Funding The project Third Xinjiang Scientific Expedition “Construction of biological resources collection and conservation platform in arid area” (2022xjkk1505), the Third Xinjiang Scientific Expedition “Investigation on Resources and Environment of Mount Altaishan Cross border Protected Area” (2022xjkk0801).

Sampling Methods

Conduct field surveys, take photos and collect specimens. Press the specimens using specimen clips and absorbent paper. After the plants are dry, fix the specimens with white glue and strips of paper. Identify the collected specimens according to "Flora of China" and "Flora of Xinjiang". Supplement the number of plant species by consulting the specimens and documents in the Chinese Virtual Herbarium (CVH, https://www.cvh.ac.cn/), the National Specimen Information Infrastructure (NSII, http://www.nsii.org.cn/) and the herbarium of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (XJBI).

Study Extent The study focus on wild vascular plants in the Xinjiang Xiata Ancient Road National Forest Park.
Quality Control Ensure that the collected plant specimens are complete, including roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Use the "Flora of Xinjiang" and the "Flora of China" as the identification basis. For difficult-to-identify species, consult experts in the relevant fields in a timely manner. During the identification process, record in detail the identification characteristics, identification basis, reference materials, and other information of each species, as well as the problems encountered during the identification process and the solutions. These records will not only help trace the identification process but also provide a basis for subsequent research and quality assessment. The final species names should be corrected using SP2000 and TNRS. Then, compare with the research results of the same region or similar habitats to evaluate the reliability of the results of this investigation.

Method step description:

  1. 1.The plant list is based on field surveys conducted annually from 2021 and 2024, during which 1930 plant specimens were collected. These specimens are preserved at the Herbarium of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences. 2.Additional specimen data and distribution records were obtained from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium (CVH, https://www.cvh.ac.cn/), National Specimen Resource Sharing Platform (NSII, http://www.nsii.org.cn/), Herbarium of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XJBI), Chinese Plant Image Database (PPBC, https://ppbc.iplant.cn/), Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF, https://www.gbif-uat.org/), and newly published taxonomic articles. 3.Botanical names were verified using the Taxonomic Name Resolution Service (TNRS) and standardized according to The Plant List (TPL, http://www.theplantlist.org/). The classification systems used are the PPG I system (PPG I 2016) for ferns, the Christenhusz system for gymnosperms, and the APG IV system (APG IV 2016) for angiosperms.
