Descrição

This dataset archives a total of 24919 valid observation records of 12 mammal species obtained via infrared camera monitoring in Jiangshan Xianxialing Nature Reserve, China, from January 2021 to November 2023. Based on this dataset, analyses of species diversity, studies on diel activity rhythms of mammals, and discussions on seasonal distribution patterns along the altitudinal gradient are conducted, so as to provide scientific support for biodiversity conservation in this region.

The geographic coordinates of Xianxialing Reserve range from 28°15′26″N to 28°21′11″N, and 118°33′42″E to 118°41′05″E . The region has an annual average temperature of approximately 15.0 ℃, an annual precipitation ranging from 1650 mm to 2200 mm, and an average altitude of about 1000 m. Owing to its complex topography and terrain, the area maintains four distinct seasons with coordinated light and temperature conditions, while exhibiting pronounced microclimatic characteristics.

This study aims to: (1) characterize the baseline diversity and species composition of mammals in the Xianxialing Nature Reserve; (2) analyze the relative abundance, diel activity patterns, α-diversity indices, daily activity rhythms and annual activity patterns of nine representative threatened species, and (3) explore the mechanism by which the environmental factor of elevation influences the distribution of these nine species across different seasons. This study is expected to provide data support for the conservation and refined management of rare and endangered mammals in the Xianxialing Nature Reserve.

To ensure the independence of mammal records, consecutive captures of the same species by a single camera within an interval of 30 minutes are counted as one independent valid detection event. One camera operating in the field for 24 hours is defined as one effective camera day.

Controle de Qualidade This study identified species based on the systematic review of all photographs and video footage obtained from infrared cameras, using the "Atlas of Mammals in China" along with relevant specimens and literature. Chinese and Latin names of species were determined according to the "List of Mammals in China." Conservation status was referenced from the "National List of Key Protected Wild Animals" (2021), the "IUCN Red List of Threatened Species" (2026), and the "China Biodiversity Red List—Vertebrates" (2020). In the final data analysis, all records that could only be identified to the family level (Muridae or Sciuridae) without species-level determination were excluded.

Descrição dos passos do método:

  1. The photo and video data captured by the infrared cameras were archived and saved according to the camera numbers, and corresponding folders were created. Information such as the file numbers, formats, and shooting dates and times were extracted from each folder and recorded in Excel. Species identification was conducted using the image data, and independent detections were screened. An independent photo refers to adjacent images of the same individual at the same camera site with an interval of at least 30 minutes.

Introduction Mammalian diversity and activity patterns are crucial for understanding adaptive evolution and formulating conservation strategies. However, systematic analyses of the activity rhythms of threatened mammals in Xianxialing Nature Reserve, Jiangshan, Zhejiang—a biodiversity hotspot—have been lacking. This study systematically monitored mammalian diversity and the diurnal and seasonal activity patterns of nine threatened species within the reserve. Using continuous data from 97 infrared camera traps over 106215 trap-days, we obtained 24919 valid independent mammal photographs, identifying 12 species (excluding Muridae and Sciuridae), belonging to four orders and seven families. The top three species in terms of relative abundance, from highest to lowest, are: Reeves ’Muntjacs (Muntiacus reevesi), Masked Palm Civets (Paguma larvata), and Hog Badgers (Arctonyx collaris). Reeves ’Muntjacs and Black Muntjacs exhibited bimodal daily activity patterns with distinct crepuscular tendencies, while Masked Palm Civets, Chinese Hares and Chinese Ferret-badgers were clearly nocturnal. Furthermore, peak activity varied seasonally or monthly; for example, Rhesus Macaques showed significantly higher activity peaks in October compared to other months, whereas Chinese Hare displayed the highest activity intensity during winter. Different species also showed varying preferences for elevation across seasons.
