Description

This dataset originates from a bird survey conducted at 12 universities in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, during the period from 2019 to 2020. It contains detailed species and geographic information.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 288 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Sampling Methods

We used line transect method to investigate species composition and individual quantity of birds in 12 universities in Nanjing, China.

Study Extent All 12 universities are located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. Among them, the Sipailou Campus of Southeast University, Nanjing Forestry University, and Weigang Campus of Nanjing Agricultural University are situated in Xuanwu District of Nanjing. Minggugong Campus of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics is located in Qinhuai District. Gulou Campus of Nanjing University and Suiyuan Campus of Nanjing Normal University are in Gulou District of Nanjing. Nanjing University of Finance and Economics, Nanjing University Xianlin Campus, Nanjing Normal University Xianlin Campus, Nanjing Vocational College of Information Technology, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine are situated in Qixia District of Nanjing.
Quality Control The counting method adopts the combination of accurate counting method and estimation method. The smal number of groups adopts direct accurate counting method while the large number of groups adopts group statistics method.

Method step description:

  1. From January 2019 to December 2019, monthly bird surveys were conducted at each of the 12 university campuses using line transect methods. Within each campus, two fixed survey transects were established to cover a variety of habitat types including water bodies, grasslands, woodlands, educational areas, and sports fields. The length of these transects ranged from 0.5km to 2km, depending on the size of the campus, with the aim of covering the entire campus as comprehensively as possible. On days with clear weather conditions, no rain, snow, or strong winds, surveys were carried out between 07:00 and 10:00 in the morning and between 16:00 and 19:00 in the afternoon. Surveyors walked along the transects at a speed of approximately 3km per hour. Using 10x40 binoculars, they observed and recorded bird species within 50 meters on both sides of each transect using direct identification and call-count methods. In the event of flying birds, only those flying in the opposite direction of the surveyors were counted, while birds flying from behind were not counted. During the surveys, bird species and their quantities were recorded along each transect. When encountering large flocks of birds, group counting methods were used.
