Description

In order to fully understand the current status of wild vascular plant resources in the Xinjiang Xitianshan National Nature Reserve and provide basic data for subsequent work, it is necessary to revise and update the list of wild vascular plants in the Xinjiang Xitianshan National Nature Reserve. Based on previous research, through literature collection, specimen study, field investigation and the latest classification research results, the list of wild vascular plants in the Western Tianshan National Nature Reserve of Xinjiang has been updated. A total of 652 species belonging to 312 genera and 73 families (including infraspecific taxa, the same below) were recorded, among which 21 species belong to 12 genera and 10 families of ferns, 3 species belong to 2 genera and 2 families of gymnosperms, and 628 species belong to 298 genera and 61 families of angiosperms.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 652 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Geographic Coverage

Situated in Kuerdening Town, Gongliu County, Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the reserve spans geographical coordinates of 43°03′–43°15′N and 82°51′–83°06′E. It extends 28 km north to south and 14 km east to west, encompassing approximately 28,000 hectares. The area receives an annual precipitation of 800–1,000 mm, comparable to subtropical levels, making it the region with the highest rainfall in Xinjiang and earning it the moniker “oasis” amid the arid desert.

Title Plant Inventory of the Western Tianshan National Nature Reserve in Xinjiang, China
Funding The project Third Xinjiang Scientific Expedition “Construction of biological resources collection and conservation platform in arid area” (2022xjkk1505), the Third Xinjiang Scientific Expedition “Investigation on Resources and Environment of Mount Altaishan Cross border Protected Area” (2022xjkk0801).

Sampling Methods

Conduct field surveys, take photos and collect specimens. Press the specimens using specimen clips and absorbent paper. After the plants are dry, fix the specimens with white glue and strips of paper. Identify the collected specimens according to "Flora of China" and "Flora of Xinjiang". Supplement the number of plant species by consulting the specimens and documents in the Chinese Virtual Herbarium (CVH, https://www.cvh.ac.cn/), the National Specimen Information Infrastructure (NSII, http://www.nsii.org.cn/) and the herbarium of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (XJBI).

Study Extent Taking the wild vascular plants in the Xitianshan National Nature Reserve of Xinjiang as the research object.
Quality Control Ensure that the collected plant specimens are complete, including roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Use the "Flora of Xinjiang" and the "Flora of China" as the identification basis. For difficult-to-identify species, consult experts in the relevant fields in a timely manner. During the identification process, record in detail the identification characteristics, identification basis, reference materials, and other information of each species, as well as the problems encountered during the identification process and the solutions. These records will not only help trace the identification process but also provide a basis for subsequent research and quality assessment. The final species names should be corrected using SP2000 and TNRS. Then, compare with the research results of the same region or similar habitats to evaluate the reliability of the results of this investigation.

Method step description:

  1. 1.The plant list is based on a field investigation conducted from 2022 to 2024, during which 825 specimens were collected, totaling over 3,000 samples, which are now preserved in the Herbarium of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences. 2. Other specimen data and distribution records are from China Virtual Herbarium (CVH, https://www.cvh.ac.cn/), national specimen resource sharing platform (NSII) http://www.nsii.org.cn/), herbarium of Xinjiang Institute of ecology and Geography (XJBI), China Plant Image Database (PPBC, https://ppbc.iplant.cn/), global biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) https://www.gbif-uat.org/) and flora of xinjiang. 3. The Plant name using classification name resolution services (TNRS) for validation, and according to the Plant List (TPL, http://www.theplantlist.org/) for standardization. The classification systems used are the PPG I system for ferns (PPG I 2016), the Christenhusz system for gymnosperms and the APG IV system for angiosperms (APG IV 2016).
